UPDATE: Planned Power Outage at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital
(Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Muskoka, ON) – Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is providing an update to the community regarding the planned temporary power interruption at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (SMMH), currently underway as part of a scheduled infrastructure upgrade to strengthen the hospital’s electrical systems.
The outage began at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, and was originally expected to conclude at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15. Due to the complexity of the work involved in upgrading the hospital’s Automatic Transfer Switches, normal power is now expected to be restored as early as 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Throughout this period, extensive planning and coordination remain in place to ensure patient safety and continuity of care. Clinical teams, facilities staff, and regional partners continue to work closely to manage impacts and minimize risk.
During the extended outage, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department continues to operate at reduced capacity and is providing emergent care only. Emergency Medical Services will continue to redirect patients, including mental health patients, to Huntsville District Memorial Hospital, which remains fully operational and able to provide emergency services. This approach helps ensure timely access to care while the upgrades are completed safely.
MAHC has a comprehensive mitigation and communications plan in place, including coordination with paramedic services, municipal emergency management, police and fire services, regional hospitals, and Home and Community Care partners. Contingency plans also remain in place should an unexpected external power interruption occur.
MAHC thanks patients, families, staff, physicians, first responders, and community partners for their patience and cooperation. These upgrades are an important investment that support MAHC’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, reliable, and high‑quality care for the communities we serve.
Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare will notify the community once power has been fully restored.
