Student Opportunities

We look forward to supporting you in your journey becoming the future of healthcare.

At Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) we are proud to collaborate with educational institutions across Ontario to help shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. Whether you are just beginning to explore healthcare or are well into your training, there is a place for you here. If your institution is not currently listed among our partners, we encourage you to reach out. We are open to new partnerships with educational institutions.

We are dedicated to supporting your growth as a student, offering an interprofessional environment where you can learn, gain new skills, and develop your competencies for professional and collaborative care in a hospital environment. Our staff are committed to fostering an environment that empowers you to succeed. Many students who begin their journey here choose to continue and grow their careers with us.

MAHC partners with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) University to train over 100 future physicians and allied health professionals each year. Established in 2005, NOSM is recognized for its innovative, community-engaged medical education model, partnering with Lakehead and Laurentian Universities. The school provides students, residents, and other health learners with clinical experience in northern Ontario’s community hospitals, clinics, and family practices. MAHC also hosts third-year medical students for seven-month clerkships where they gain hands-on experience under physician supervision in various specialties. Please apply directly to the NOSM Site Administrator by emailing jennifer.lorenz@mahc.ca.

Looking for more information for a midwifery placement? Please apply directly to the Midwives of Muskoka by visiting their website, or have your school’s Placement Coordinator contact admin@midwivesofmuskoka.ca.

Placements

We offer a comprehensive orientation program to warmly welcome nursing students from colleges and universities across the province to both of our hospital sites. Our nursing students are matched with a knowledgeable and qualified preceptor for the duration of their placement. Working alongside this preceptor, students can build clinical nursing skills. Specialty units such as the operating room, obstetrics, or within inpatient areas are available at our hospitals.

To arrange a placement, please coordinate through your academic institution. Clinical experiences at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare can only begin once your institution has an established affiliation agreement with us. Be sure to check with your student placement office to confirm that an agreement is in place.

All placement requests should be sent to education@mahc.ca.

Clinical Externships

Our clinical externships offer paid positions where nursing students can gain valuable work experience under supervision as an Unregulated Care Provider. These opportunities are specifically designed for current nursing students and provide a transitional role that includes:

  • Specialized clinical experience with direct patient care
  • Experience in patient assessments and documentation
  • Opportunities to collaborate as part of an interprofessional team
  • On-the-job learning that will prepare you for a future career

Please visit the Career Opportunities page to see available opportunities or email jobs@mahc.ca for more information.

MAHC accepts post-secondary students from a wide range of disciplines who need to complete a supervised practicum as part of their academic requirements.
