If you think that you or anyone around you may be experiencing a stroke, it is very important that you call 9-1-1 for an ambulance immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.
The District Stroke Centre at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare helps to reduce the effects of stroke through treatment that follows province-wide best practices for stroke as part of the Central East Stroke Network.
MAHC's Huntsville District Memorial Hospital Site is a designated District Stroke Centre with specially trained staff and physicians educated in stroke best practices. The role of a District Stroke Centre is also to:
- Provide organized stroke prevention and care to the Muskoka area;
- Provide leadership and work with stakeholders to achieve integrated stroke care throughout the North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN; and
- Work with the Regional Stroke Centre, and other partners, to provide leadership in coordinating stroke care throughout our catchment area and across the entire continuum of care.
Once a stroke patient is stabilized, an interprofessional team will work with patients to help to improve the physical, cognitive, and communicative deficits that are often a result of stroke. Our team works with patients and their families to develop a recovery plan.under the Ontario Stroke System. This means as a district centre we are the only hospital in Muskoka that provides the clot-busting drug tPA and the ambulance will go directly to the Emergency Department in Huntsville where you will be treated.
Know Your Risk Factors
Each person has their own risk factors for stroke. By discussing this with your health care providers, you can learn about your risks, and reduce your risk by taking action to manage them. The Heart & Stroke Foundation provides a FAST way to recognize the signs of stroke.
