Tobacco Cessation
Tobacco cessation contributes significantly to overall health improvements and reduces the likelihood of re-hospitalization. In 2013, MAHC began a partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to implement the Ottawa Model of Smoking Cessation to provide a comprehensive tobacco cessation program. How does this program work? A registered respiratory therapist visits all hospitalized patients who have used tobacco in the past six months. The consultation starts with a brief questionnaire, from which further plans are created together with the patient. Plans can include:
-
Arrangement of nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline or buproprion. This can be a key component for hospitalized patients wanting to quit as well as those who simply have the need to remain comfortable within the smoke-free environment of the hospital.
-
Printed materials
-
Follow-up telephone calls after discharge from hospital, to provide further reinforcement for permanent tobacco cessation
Referrals & Appointments
Outpatient appointments are made upon referral by your physician. If you need a test, your physician or other health care provider will make the initial request. MAHC will contact you to arrange the test. You will receive all of the information that you need to prepare for your appointment. Should you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call the Patient Appointment Scheduling office at 1-877-348-6264.
