Accessibility improvements at the front entrance of Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) Site will make it easier for patients and visitors with mobility challenges to come and go at the hospital.
Work commenced in October to improve the wheelchair ramps at the front entrance of the hospital after a Code Plus Assessment identified that the existing ramps were not conducive to mobility devices. The Code Plus Assessment was undertaken as part of an initiative to ensure that MAHC’s hospital facilities are senior-friendly.
One new accessible ramp has been constructed, which increases the number of accessible access points at the front entrance to four. In addition, one of the existing ramps was replaced with a wider, five-foot ramp identical to the newly constructed ramp. Both have new hand railings for ease of access for seniors and those with mobility challenges. Curbs and sloped surfaces have been repainted for improved visibility as well.
Natalie Bubela, Chief Executive Officer at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC), said the hospital is doing its part to ensure accessibility for all citizens. She said community feedback has also contributed to this positive change.
“MAHC is currently working to update its Accessibility Plan and is continually evaluating opportunities to eliminate barriers,” Bubela says. “The ramps and railings were designed to improve accessibility and comply with current accessibility standards. These enhancements help to improve the quality of life for patients and visitors with mobility challenges.”
