MAHC is governed by a 17-member Board of Directors.  Twelve (12) directors are elected on a rotational basis for three-year terms by the Members of the Corporation.  The elected Directors shall be elected in rotation for a three (3) year term and at least four (4) Directors' terms shall expire each year.

The following people hold non-voting, ex-officio positions on the Board of Directors:

 Phil Matthews, Board Chair
Phil Matthews, Board ChairPhilip Matthews is a Chartered Accountant with an M.A. Economics (Hons.) from Edinburgh University. Mr. Matthews was a Partner with Clarkson Gordon/Ernst & Young from 1980 until he retired in 2004.

Mr. Matthews is a Director with a number of organizations currently. He is Chair of the Audit Committee and member of the Governance Committee with Exco Technologies Limited. As well, he is Chair of the Board, Lakeland Holding Ltd., Bracebridge Generation Ltd., Lakeland Power Distribution Ltd., Lakeland Energy/Networks.

Since his election to the Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare Board of Directors in 2011, Mr. Matthews has served as Chair of the Resources, Audit, Strategic Planning  and Quality & Patient Safety Committees as well as Co-Chair of the Master Program/Master Plan Ad Hoc Steering Committee and as Vice-Chair for the Board of Directors. Currently, Mr. Matthews holds the position of Chair of the Board.  
 Cameron Renwick, Co Vice-Chair and Capital Plan Development Task Force Chair
Cameron Renwick, Co Vice ChairCameron Renwick is a Certified Orthotist who practices in Huntsville, Ontario. In 1996, Mr. Renwick moved to Huntsville and founded Algonquin Orthopaedics where he began providing local orthotic treatment to patients in Muskoka.  Mr. Renwick holds a Master of Health Management and is a Certified Health Executive in the College of Health Leaders of Canada. He has held a number of committee positions within his own profession over the past decade with portfolios in education, professional credentialing and corporate restructuring. Most recently Mr. Renwick was President of the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists. He lives in Huntsville with his wife and three children.

Mr. Renwick was elected to the MAHC Board of Directors in June 2013, and has served as Chair of the Governance Committee, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee as well as the Nominations Committee.  Currently, he is the Vice-Chair of the Board and Chair of the Capital Plan Development Task Force as well as a member of the Executive Committee.
 Don Eastwood, Co Vice-Chair and Quality & Patient Safety Committee Chair

Don Eastwood, Co Vice ChairDon is a professionally trained economic development practitioner, with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies degree (B.E.S.), majoring in Geography from the University of Waterloo. Don subsequently attained his Master's Degree (M.A.) also from the University of Waterloo, specializing in regional economic development. His thesis research explored the dynamics of technology-based firm creation and policy -based initiatives in the Kitchener-Waterloo area which served to help guide the evolution of the "Canada's Technology Triangle" collaboration between four municipalities. Don subsequently received post graduate training from the Economic Developers Association of Canada and on-going professional development while employed for over 30 years with various municipalities in Ontario.

Don has served in progressively responsible staff and management positions with some of the most dynamic growth municipalities in Ontario. Following graduation Don was employed by the City of Toronto in the fledgling Economic Development Division of the City Planning Department and was instrumental in developing a Technology Transfer Strategy to facilitate start-up technology businesses and marketing strategies for the Port Industrial Land precinct. Don subsequently worked with the Regional Municipality of Halton and later on, as General Manager of the City of Cambridge Business Development Division, where he was chiefly responsible for the development of an industrial park adjacent to the Toyota assembly complex in that City. During that time, Don was also a co-founder of the Canada's Technology Triangle partnership which was a collaborative initiative to foster technology-based development in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge-Guelph region.

Don was recruited to be the start-up CEO of a regional business initiative called the "Canada's Technology Triangle Accelerator Network (CTTAN)" to foster the investment of private capital into early stage technology business start-ups.

Don went on to help grow the economic development program of the Regional Municipality of York and also was an active participant in the establishment and administration of the York Region Human Services Plan. Don was recruited to lead the City of Toronto Economic Development Culture and Tourism Division and was instrumental in leading the establishment of several sectoral strategies and new cultural events such as "Nuit Blanche".

In later positions Don led the development of new strategic plans and re-organizations in the City of Brampton and the Town of Innisfil.

Don retired to the shores of Lake of Bays in spring 2015.

Don has been active on a number of Boards and committees in his business career. He had been a member of the Boards of Directors of:

Don is married with three grown children and one grandchild who loves coming to see "Boompah and ZuZu" at the "cottage". Don and Pat are avid walkers with their energetic Golden Retriever named "Kipper" and they also enjoy spending time boating, canoeing/kayaking and cross country skiing or snowshoeing here in Muskoka.

Don was appointed to the MAHC Board of Directors in June 2017.  Don is currently the Chair of the Quality & Patient Safety Committee as well as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, the Nominations Committee and the Executive Committee.

 Brenda Gefucia, Treasurer and Chair of Resources & Audit Committee

Brenda Gefucia, TreasurerBrenda Gefucia is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CGA) and an accredited Executive Coach (CEC).  Ms. Gefucia spent 30 years of her professional career with Canadian Tire Corporation, retiring in 2010 as a financial executive.  In 2011 she became associated with Forrest & Company and began what is now her second career as a Business Consultant and Executive Coach.

Since joining the MAHC Board of Directors in June of 2014, Ms. Gefucia has served on the Resources Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Master Program/Master Plan Ad Hoc Steering Committee and is currently the Treasurer and Chair of the Resources & Audit Committee.

For four years she served on the Board of Directors of Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) in York Region as Vice Chair of the Board and on the Finance & Audit Committee, Business Development Committee and Planning Committee.

Born and raised in Bracebridge, and after spending 30 years in the GTA, Ms. Gefucia has returned to her roots and now makes her home in Bracebridge.

 Beth Goodhew
Beth Goodhew, DirectorBeth Goodhew graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1985 with a Bachelor of Math, Computer Science Degree. Following graduation she worked with General Electric Canada for 17 years holding positions in Information Technology (IT) Management, Customer Service Management, Services Marketing and finally Manager for GE Healthcare Canada IT Professional Services.

Ms. Goodhew has worked in the health care IT industry for over 20 years. She has worked with regional health care boards and LHINs across Canada, partnering with Canada Health Infoway and Provincial eHealth organizations to define governance, privacy and security for the delivery of aspects of the electronic medical record to Canadians.

Ms. Goodhew has owned and managed a health care IT consulting company since April 2003 that delivers consulting services including strategic planning and implementation of IT systems that enable the sharing of data across the health care system. Her projects include the Ontario Perinatal Registry, Ontario Osteoporosis Data Management and Research Solution, and the Ontario Regional Diagnostic Imaging Networks.

Ms. Goodhew and her family have cottaged in Muskoka for the last 25 years and in 2015 she retired and moved to Huntsville with her husband making it their permanent home. Beth loves to golf, hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski and curl. She has two grown children living in British Columbia.

 Peter Deane

Peter Deane, DirectorPeter Deane is a retired health services planning executive and health services planning consultant, with expertise in the areas of health service integration, needs assessment, and program development.  Mr. Deane holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario as well as a Masters in Health Service Administration (Master of Public Health), University of Michigan.

Throughout his career, Mr. Deane was the lead consultant for Deane Consulting, focusing on health service planning and facilitation.  Prior to that he was the Executive Director of three different District Health Councils in Ontario and also held the position of Executive Assistant to the Treasurer of Ontario.

He has extensive board governance-related experience including a position with the Premier's Council on Health with the Ontario Government, the Needs Impact Based Planning Committee with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the United Way Board.  

After joining the MAHC Board of Directors in 2017 as a Community Representative, he served as a member on the Resources & Audit Committee as well as the Capital Plan Development Task Force.  He was appointed to the Board of Directors in June 2018 and serves as a member on the Quality & Patient Safety Committee while also continuing on the Capital Plan Development Task Force.

Mr. Deane and his wife Mary Ellen have lived in Muskoka for over 25 years where they raised three sons who have moved on to professional careers, two in the health field. Mary Ellen is a retired Public Health Dietician. In his free time, he enjoys woodworking, woodcarving, and boat building.

 Frank Arnone
Frank ArnoneFrank Arnone holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's University, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario, and a Master of Laws from the Osgoode Hall Law School. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1990.

Mr. Arnone is a Partner with Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada's top business law firms. At Blakes, his practice emphasizes domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. He also provides ongoing securities law, stock exchange compliance and corporate governance advice to a wide variety of clients. Mr. Arnone is the former Co-Practice Group Leader of the Private Equity Group and the former Practice Group Leader of the Securities Group. He has been recognized as a leading lawyer in several publications including: The Best Lawyers in Canada, IFLR1000: The Guide to the World's Leading Financial Law Firms, and The Lexpert Guide and Directory.

In addition to his law practice, Mr. Arnone is currently Vice Chair and a member of the Board of Directors and Nominating & Governance Committee of the Canadian Centre for Ethics and Corporate Policy. He is also on the Board of several private companies.

Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Mr. Arnone is now an avid cottager on Lake Muskoka and looks forward to spending as much time in the region as possible.

Mr. Arnone was elected to the MAHC Board of Directors in October 2015, and currently is a member of the Governance Committee.  He has also served previously as a member of the Quality & Patient Safety Committee as well as the Nominations Committee. 
 Moreen Miller
Moreen MillerMs. Moreen Miller has worked in various roles in the aggregates industry, most recently as the President of Fowlers Construction and CEO of the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. Prior to this, Ms. Miller was Vice-President, Land Management for Lafarge worldwide. She worked internationally in many countries, concentrating on legislation, rehabilitation initiatives, community affairs and sustainable development. Ms. Miller has over 25 years of experience in the rehabilitation and restoration of industrial landscapes. She has been involved in many industrial rehabilitation projects across North America, as well as provincial initiatives involving non-renewable resources, policy development, and community sustainability.

Ms. Miller has been involved in many not-for-profit boards and initiatives over the years at both the provincial and community level. Her most recent activities have focused on local community initiatives that bring value and long-term prosperity to the communities involved. She has served on several commissions and boards as well, most recently as a Commissioner on the Niagara Escarpment Commission from 2004 to 2016. She is a member of the Ministry of Labour's Ontario College of Trades Appointment Council, and sits on the board of the Bracebridge Chamber of Commerce.

Since joining the MAHC Board of Directors in September 2016, Ms. Miller is a member of the Resources & Audit Committee.  Previously, she has also been a member of the Nominations Committee. 
 Bob Manning
Bob ManningBob has experience in consulting, strategic planning, communications, management, and marketing: From 1968-1979 - consulting with McKinsey & Company, Woods Gordon and Stevenson Kellogg ; various senior management and merchandising positions with Eaton, department store; Vice-President Merchandising with Consumers Distributing. From 1979-1999 - Partner of KPMG, international firm of accountants and advisors. Chair of International Proposal Network, member of International Marketing Committee. Involved in marketing, communications, management, strategic planning, managing partner training, major business development initiatives. From 1999 - 2013 - President of Manning & Associates Inc., management consultants. Involved in marketing and customer satisfaction consulting.

Bob has served on boards of directors for a number of organizations. Below are noted the organizations served, roles played, and major initiatives completed:
  • Board of Directors, The Boulevard Club, multi-sports club with 3000 members 1976-1985, President 1984 and 1985 Led development of a Strategic Plan for the Club.
  • Board of Directors, Royal St. Georges College, private school with 500 students 1987-1996, Chair 1994-1996. Developed long range plan; recruited new headmaster; heavily involved in the negotiation process to purchase the school property from Anglican Church.
  • Board of Directors, Institute of Chartered Accountants (CPA) of Ontario 1993-1995.
  • Board of Directors, South Muskoka Curling & Golf Club 2000-2004, Chair 2004. Developed a long range plan; initiated the development of a Master Plan for the golf course.
  • Board of Directors, South Muskoka Hospital Foundation 2001-2007, Vice Chair 2006-2007. Was slated to be Chair but could not meet position requirements due to Florida commitments for the winter.
  • Member of the Strategic Plan Review Team, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital 2001-2002.
  • Board of Directors, Leonard Lake Stakeholders Association 2005-2014. Developed a Lake Plan; developed By-Laws and other key processes.
  • Board of Directors, Sandpiper Village Condo Association in Florida 2009-2017, President 2015- 2017. Strengthened processes requiring Board approval; developed a plan to ensure that the reserves would be in compliance with Florida Condo Law.

Bob joined the Board of Directors for Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare in 2017.  Bob is the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and is a member of the Quality & Patient Safety Committee as well as the Audit Subcommittee. 
 Michael Walters

Michael WaltersMichael Walters is a self-employed Mental Health Consultant working in the Ontario Mental Health and Addictions sector. He is a highly skilled, results-oriented leader who has developed high impact and effective teams throughout his career in the social service community as well as in public sector. Michael has a steadfast commitment to the promotion of diversity, inclusion, integrity and ethical behaviour in social service and business workplaces. 

Recently, Michael has worked as the Executive Director of an Addiction and Mental Health Treatment agency in Georgian Bay and Southwestern Ontario; Executive Director of Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Grande Prairie, Alberta and as Director of Operations at CMHA Elgin, St Thomas, Ontario. Prior to these roles Michael was the Executive Assistant for 15 years to the Assistant Deputy Ministers of Integrated Policy and Planning Division; Community Services and Acute Services Divisions, at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Prior to his work with the Ministries, Michael worked in the Children's Mental Health sector where he spent 10 years as a Senior Manager and Counsellor at several Ontario Children's Mental Health service providers as well as at Individual and Family focused treatment agencies. Michael has an undergraduate degree in Social Work and is currently working on his Masters of Social Work degree.

Michael first joined the MAHC Board of Directors in June 2015 and served a one year term as a Community Representative on the Strategic Planning Committee. Since his appointment as a Board Director in June 2016, Michael has served on the Strategic Planning Committee, Governance Committee and the Resources & Audit Committee. He is currently a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and the Quality & Patient Safety Committee.
Kathy Newby
Kathy NewbyKathy Newby holds an Honours B.A. from the University of Guelph and a Bachelor of Education from OTEC in Hamilton. Kathy's 37 year teaching career includes both lead teacher designation and vice-principal positions. She has specialized in networking initiatives that integrate child care, community outreach, and mental health expertise.

In Kathy's role as school administrator, she was responsible for developing and monitoring Risk Assessment including Health and Safety, Security, and Emergency Response plans. She also has a passion for supporting mental health and well-being initiatives.

Kathy and her family have been seasonal residents in Muskoka for 47 years and since retirement in 2010 reside at Lake of Bays. Kathy has varied experience on boards and committee of not-for-profit organizations, most recently the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation board of directors. She also serves as Chair of the Outreach and Education Committee. Kathy enjoys boating, gardening, live music events, theatre and travel. She and her husband have three adult children, one a resident of Gravenhurst, one a resident of Lake of Bays, and one residing in Ottawa. Kathy  joined the MAHC Board in 2017.  Kathy is serving as a member of the Governance Committee as well as the Chair of the Nominations Committee.
